Community Service:
Our recent "hands on project" has been the Backpacks for the Well in the Desert. Our club gave 70 backpacks to cleints of the Well in the Desert on July 30, 2008. Backpacks were filled with toiletries, first aid kits, socks, flashlights, can openers and snacks. The homeless, working poor, children, veterans and seniors are some of the many groups that the Well in the Desert Serves. An Opportunity Grant along with generous donations from our club provided the supplies and backpacks.
Cahuilla Elementary School Project: Each year our club donates supplies, equipment, books, dictionaries to the Elementary School. Our members donate their time to volunteer in the classroom to assist as tudors and readers for the classes. In 2007 we charted an EarlyAct Club. This group of industrious children raised money through various fundraisers to provide to their community locally and internationally. They certainly are our "future leaders". It has been a pure joy to see them contribute so much.
CPR Project:
We are in our 3rd year of our CPR Anytime: Family and Friends Project. The Rotary Club of Palm Spring provides free training in basic CPR skills in conjuntion with the Weil Institute of Critical Care Medicine in Rancho Mirage. We are the first group to partner with the Weil Institue in their goal of training 10,000 people in the Coachella Valley in basic CPR using American Heart Association's CPR Anytime Family and Friends program. Our club plans to be a catalyst to lead the Coachella Valley in becoming a "HeartSafe Community." Our program has been funded through an Opportunity Grant as well as the Aqua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.
Angel View Prom
This will be our fifth year the Rotary Club of Palm Springs will sponsor a part for the residents of Angel View Crippled Children's Foundation. Angel View is a non-profit organization that has been helping physically challenged young people in the Coachella Valley since the early 1950's. The Angel View Prom is held in June. This event is greatly anticipated each year by Angel View as well as our Club. Our club creates an actual Prom scene and all who attend enjoy the music and fun. The Interact Club from Palm Springs High School also attend and assist in the event.
This event was funded by the Wallis Jones Grant and a grant from the Club Foundation.
