Who Knows? April 28, 2010 I don't!

It was another exciting and windy week at the Palm Springs Rotary.  Thanks to participants Chuck Cheeld for leading the flag salute; Mike Brill for helping us count to "4"; and the Reverend Jim Griffes, for reminding us that life is better when we live the Four Way Test.

Jacque Wachs served up the introductions of visitors and guests, which included Palm Springs Mayor Pro Tem, Rick Hutchinson; Spa Hotel sales manager, Michael Potts; past district governor, Jack Horner; Janice and Linea Garland; and Joanna Acuna, who arrived with a stroller full of diapers.  Jacque also bid a fond (and hopefully temporary) farewell to sojourners John Jackson and Charlie House, both of whom were returning to their respective hometowns later in the week.

Bob Allen presented Karl Kruger with yet another Paul Harris fellowship earned in part through bonus recognition points with thanks for hosting our recent party at the Riviera Hotel.

Mike Sellin gave a report on Rotarians at Work day, which included clean up and painting at two local residences, neither of which was owned by a member of the club.  Mike reported that both work groups received special thanks from the neighborhood for their hard work.  Visit the Palm Springs Rotary Club web site to see the photos.

Club members Tony Signoret, Chuck Cheeld, Gary Luce, Steve Hodgdon, and Karl Kruger each gave their annual verbal book reports on subjects ranging from shelter boxes and ambassadorial scholarships to the problem of hunger in America, working to keep young people out of gangs (and prison) and providing lap top computers to school children throughout the world.  The reports were timely and informative and even included a bibliography for each.  No doubt we'll be seeing those "Student of the Month" bumper stickers in the near future.

By the end of the meeting John Jackson, Charlie House, Karl Kruger, and Jacque Wachs were all happy but some could not remember exactly why.

Tony Signoret, setting a fine example for his fellow students by gambling his lunch money on the Opportunity Drawing, took home the $30.00 instant prize for holding the winning ticket.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS

Be sure to attend the May 5th meeting when our own Christine Cross, future club president and graduate of the Jack LaLane school of fitness, will help exercise our brains with her session on strategic planning for our club.

Then on May 12th, you won't want to miss Shab Elawar, district 5330's polio eradication chairman, who will provide an update on Rotary's Polio Plus Program.  Be glad you live in California where the police don't check your immunization status.

On May 19th, the kids from Palm Springs High are in charge.  Brian Engleson, PSHS Band Director will speak . . . "That's Trouble, with a capital "T" and that rhymes with "P" and that stands for . . ." well enough of that.

And not to be missed, learn how to be bankrupt, or not, from Norman Hanover, Esq., on May 26th.
